Space Command gets Trumped out of Colorado • The Register
The US President, Donald Trump, has announced his intention to relocate the US Space Command headquarters from its current location in Colorado to Huntsville, Alabama.
Trump added that the city was “forever to be known from this point as Rocket City.”
He continued, “We love Alabama. I only won it by about 47 points,” before turning to officials behind him and saying, “I don’t think that influenced my decision, though, right?”
“This will result in more than 30,000 Alabama jobs and probably much more than that, and hundreds of millions of dollars of investment. And that’s billions, because it can’t be millions. It’s billions and billions of dollars.”
And why the move? Trump explained, “The problem I have with Colorado, one of the big problems, they do mail-in voting. They went to all mail-in voting, so they have automatically crooked elections, and we can’t have that … so, that played a big factor.”
The location of the US Space Command headquarters in Colorado was a decision made by the previous Biden administration. However, the US military and NASA both have extensive facilities in and around Huntsville.
United States Senator from Alabama, Tommy Tuberville, welcomed the announcement and wrote, “For FOUR YEARS, I have fought to get U.S. Space Command moved to its SELECTED home at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.
“Thank you, President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, for reversing Joe Biden’s political cronyism and restoring MERIT and INTEGRITY to this process.”
Unsurprisingly, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser was less than impressed and called on the Trump administration to “not play political games with our nation’s military readiness and military families.” After saying the move was “wrong” for national defense, Weiser also noted that it was wrong for Space Command personnel and their families who had relocated and purchased homes in the area. It’ll be less than ideal for businesses and civilians who support the current base.
He concluded, “I’m prepared to challenge it [the move] in court.”
When asked if he had any concerns about the willingness of people to relocate from Colorado to Alabama, Trump shook his head and said, “I’m not worried, then we’ll get somebody else,” before launching into another tirade about what he perceived as Colorado’s “corrupt” voting system.
Politics aside, Huntsville has enjoyed the unofficial title of “Rocket City” for many years. Many US military rockets and missiles were developed and tested at the US Army Redstone Arsenal site, and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center was established there. It was also the site where the Saturn rockets were developed, the V variant of which would send Apollo astronauts to the Moon.
Moving the US Space Command headquarters will undoubtedly cause disruption, but at least a name has been selected for the new location. During the White House briefing, Senator Tuberville said, ” Thank you, Mr. President, for this. And we look forward to building a huge space command and having the Donald J. Trump Space Command Center in Huntsville, Alabama.” ®
