Apple reportedly developing AI inference chip for its own data centers

Apple is developing its own artificial intelligence chip for data centers, the Wall Street Journal reports, citing people familiar with the matter. The effort, known internally as “Project ACDC” (Apple Chips in Data Center), is designed to leverage Apple’s expertise in chip design for its server infrastructure. The chip will focus on executing AI models (inference) rather than training, similar to Meta’s MTIA AI chip. Apple is working closely with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to design and produce such chips. However, it is unclear if and when the project will be unveiled. Apple has previously dodged questions about its AI plans, but CEO Tim Cook stressed to Reuters that the company remains very optimistic about the possibilities of generative AI and is making significant investments.
